[sticky entry] Sticky: An Introduction

Hello, all - I'm JustMcShane, and I write fic, sporadically. You may have seen me on AO3 at [archiveofourown.org profile] JustMcShane, where I post most of my work, or possibly on whofic, where I also post some amount of my stuff. I rec fics fairly regularly over at[community profile] tardis_library and I honestly can't think of any other sites that I frequent often enough to mention. Hopefully I'll be using this account frequently in the future.

I use she/her pronouns, incidentally.

See you all around, I guess!

Les Fleurs Du Mal | Doctor Who/Hannibal | 6/?

Title: Les Fleurs Du Mal

Length: 6710 words
Chapters: 6/? | previous: 1 2, 3, 4, 5
Fandoms: Doctor Who, NBC's Hannibal
Rating: Mature
Chapter warnings: (Highlight for chapter spoilers) should I even bother mentioning cannibalism at this point? It’s pretty much implied with the fandom. Implied stabbing. Possible paranoia fuel.
Characters: Seventh Doctor, Ace McShane, Hannibal Lecter, Will Graham, ensemble cast

Summary: An unexpected detour leads to the Doctor and Ace teaming up with the FBI to investigate a series of disturbingly specific floral-themed murders. But with Ace's increasingly strange dreams, a hyper-empathetic consultant who can't seem to empathize quite so well any more, and one Doctor Hannibal Lecter in the mix, the murders may be the least of their problems...

Alt links: AO3, Whofic, ff.net

Notes: Hello again - it's been 10+ months and I'm ready to make some characters suffer. Thank you to Jane for the marvelous meticulous beta work, as always, and to Jaybird for patiently sitting through me talking at lighting pace about the end section. Hopefully I can get back into a somewhat regular posting schedule soon - for this and other fics as well!

fic: Last Words | Alex Rider (1/1)

Title: Last Words
Length: 698 words
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Alex Rider
Rating: Teen and Up Audiences
Warnings: Swearing
Characters: Alex Rider, Tom Harris
Additional Tags: Spyfest 2019, Post-Series, Shortfic
Summary: "If I've ever delivered a 'cool pre-arse-kicking one-liner' to any sort of 'villain' I've ever 'faced down' in a 'battle for the fate of the world itself', it's not springing to mind at the moment."
Alternate Links: AO3, ff.net
Notes: For the week 3 prompt ‘Alex's best punchline to a villain.’ Bit of a short and lackluster one, because I really didn’t know where to go with this, and I needed to work on other writing projects.
'Oh, come ON.' )

fic: Facts and Figures | Alex Rider (1/1)

Title: Facts and Figures
Length: 5324
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Alex Rider
Rating: Teen and Up Audiences
Warnings: Swearing, implied major character death, implied child death
Characters: Alex Rider, Smithers
Additional Tags: Spyfest 2019, Post-Series, supernatural elements
Summary: Here’s a fact to start off with: Alex Rider should be dead.
Alternate Links: AO3, ff.net

Notes: For the Spyfest Week 2 prompt - "There's one secret everyone takes to the grave." Took me a while to come up with an idea for this, but I think I got something reasonably solid - and just in time, too. I've wanted to do something with Smithers for a while, and I suspect those last few Hell Is Other People updates may have inspired this, to some extent. Hopefully this doesn't seem too forced!

I may have to go back and edit this later.

fic: felt my slow blood warm | Alex Rider

Title: felt my slow blood warm
Length: 2924 words
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Alex Rider
Rating: Teen and Up Audiences
Warnings: Possibly inaccurate hasty medical procedures
Characters: Alex Rider, Snake
Additional Tags: Spyfest 2019, hurt/comfort
Summary: Being stuck in a rain-drenched forest in the middle of nowhere is a great bonding exercise, apparently.
Alternate Links: AO3, ff.net

Notes:
I've been pretty inactive around a lot of places recently because of the dreaded Real Life. I'd love to be able to participate in fandom and fandom-related activities a whole lot more than I do (there's so many excellent fic exchanges on that I can't do! D:) but health, work, and other such things keep me from doing so. That being said, I did manage to sign up for a challenge for one of my smaller fandoms - Spyfest, a writing challenge/fic exchange for the Alex Rider book series. So I'll hopefully be getting at least a couple more fics done for that over the next month, of which this is the first.

The week one general prompt was ‘a SAS soldier meets the animal he was named after’, which was a frankly fabulous prompt to kick this off with. I’m afraid I’m quite new to this fandom, relatively speaking, and so my writing may not be too great for the characters I’ve chosen. Title from ‘Snake’ by Ned Rorem. I’m not original when it comes to titles, apparently.

Rule one - don't panic. )

Les Fleurs Du Mal | Doctor Who/Hannibal | 5/?

Title: Les Fleurs Du Mal

Length: 3270 words
Chapters: 5/? | previous: 1 2, 3, 4
Fandoms: Doctor Who, NBC's Hannibal
Rating: Mature
Chapter warnings: (Highlight for chapter spoilers) implied cannibalism, major character being poisoned rather badly, coughing up blood, implied hallucinations.

Alt links: AO3, Whofic

Notes: I decided to stop worrying about details and just post it. With the mindframe I'm in currently, that's the most stress-free thing I can do - which means it isn't as coherent/polished as it could be, but I hope people will enjoy it nonetheless. That's probably going to be the case for the rest of the fic.

Also I mayyyy have gone overboard with the cannibal puns. Whoops. Oh well.

“Last fancy dinner party I went to, there were human remains in the soup,” Ace said. )

Les Fleurs Du Mal | Doctor Who/Hannibal | 4/?

Title: Les Fleurs Du Mal

Length: 4146 words
Chapters: 4/? | previous: 1 2, 3
Fandoms: Doctor Who, NBC's Hannibal
Rating: Hannibal-typical dream hallucination things and body horror, including gore; and also some eldritch stuff.
Chapter warnings: none
Characters: Seventh Doctor, Ace McShane, Hannibal Lecter, Will Graham, ensemble cast

Summary: An unexpected detour leads to the Doctor and Ace teaming up with the FBI to investigate a series of disturbingly specific floral-themed murders. But with Ace's increasingly strange dreams, a hyper-empathetic consultant who can't seem to empathize quite so well any more, and one Doctor Hannibal Lecter in the mix, the murders may be the least of their problems...

Alt links: AO3, Whofic

Notes: Jane, if you're reading this, please come back - I miss your editing skills so much. I've resorted to switching the font over to Comic Sans and scouring it, panicked, in your absence! (Just joking. Well, I have been doing Comic Sans, but take your time.)
On a slightly more serious note, we're now getting in the stuff I've been excited to share!! More coming soon, I hope.

Will Graham was dreaming. )

Les Fleurs Du Mal | Doctor Who/Hannibal | 3/?

Title: Les Fleurs Du Mal
Length: 1949
Chapters: 3/? | previous: 1 2
Fandoms: Doctor Who, NBC's Hannibal
Rating: Mature
Chapter warnings: none
Characters: Seventh Doctor, Ace McShane, Hannibal Lecter, Will Graham, ensemble cast
Summary: An unexpected detour leads to the Doctor and Ace teaming up with the FBI to investigate a series of disturbingly specific floral-themed murders. But with Ace's increasingly strange dreams, a hyper-empathetic consultant who can't seem to empathize quite so well any more, and one Doctor Hannibal Lecter in the mix, the murders may be the least of their problems...

Notes: This chapter gave me an extraordinary amount of trouble, and as such may not be up to the quality of the rest of the fic. Sorry about that - bridging sections always tends to make me want to throw my laptop against the wall. Hopefully future chapters will be quicker in coming out. Jane isn't around to beta at the moment, so any mistakes are, regrettably, my own.

And a quick note before I continue - this takes place in a slightly divergent timeline, where neither the VNA books or Big Finish audios happened (and neither did the comics or other ranges of books/audios, for that matter). It’s been a pretty long time since Survival, and Ace and the Doctor have just been kind of bumping about the universe for maybe a decade-plus now, righting wrongs, etc. This probably isn’t directly relevant, but I felt it worth mentioning.

fic: Serendipity | Doctor Who

Title: Serendipity
Length: 667 words
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Doctor Who
Rating: Gen
Warnings: None
Characters: Hex Schofield, Seventh Doctor
Summary: Hex doesn't like crowds.
Alternate Links: Whofic, AO3
Notes: A quick little thing written for the [community profile] who_contest prompt 'Crowds'. Nothing big or especially well-thought out.

In Hex’s opinion, large crowds pretty much universally sucked. )

The List. )

To the suprise of absolutely no-one, including myself, Found Family and Hurt/Comfort are at the top of my list, and anything even remotely sexual/romantic is down at the bottom. I don't really have much to say here apart from the fact that this is an excellent guide for anybody who's thinking about writing fic for me/has been assigned to write something and isn't sure what tropes I like. fanart!!

This evening, I received a message from a wonderful WONDERFUL human being who let me know she drew fanart of my most recent hard to find & lucky to have fic!! And as every author knows, that's basically the highest praise you can receive. And it's so cute aaaa - it's Ace and Trauma Cat!!

What a wonderful way to end this year! I may be crying a bit, shh

Les Fleurs Du Mal | Doctor Who/Hannibal | 2/?

Title: Les Fleurs Du Mal
Length: 2690
Chapters: 2/? | previous: 1
Fandoms: Doctor Who, NBC's Hannibal
Rating: Mature
Chapter warnings: graphic depictions of a crime scene/past violence.

Notes:
To my great surprise, I found that this chapter didn't require as much editing as I thought it would - although I did end up splitting part of it off into an entirely new chapter that wasn't even in my initial story plan, but kind of... needs to be there, really. Writing is such a weird hobby. Thanks to Jane for eternal support/encouragement/screaming at my terrible cannibal puns. You're the real MVP here.

The pendulum swung, flashing brightly through the darkness. )

when you are alone (you are the cat, you are the phone) | Doctor Who

Title: when you are alone (you are the cat, you are the phone)
Length: 1859 words
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Doctor Who
Rating: Gen
Warnings: None - just fluff!
Characters: Ace McShane, Seventh Doctor
Additional Tags: followup to none but the things that never happened and loved the stars too fondly.
Summary: Ace flops back onto her bed, and briefly considers the age-old question: is it weird to name your newly-adopted trauma cat after your alien ex-boss?
Alternate Links: Whofic, AO3

Notes: The final gift of the year - for the mysterious and ever-supportive M, who asked for an addition/continuation to my Seven & Ace post-Gallifrey series! And how can I say no to a request like that - especially when I've been itching to continue it for quite some time?

Title from Don’t Let’s Start by They Might Be Giants.

I had another Otherstide fic I intended to post, but it looks like it's not going to be done by this year. (Sorry, Ry.) Hopefully I can finish it some time in the near future - I really did love the prompt, but I need to spend more time on it for it to be perfect! :D

Title: Les Fleurs Du Mal
Length: 3608
Chapters: 1/?
Fandoms: Doctor Who, NBC's Hannibal
Rating: Mature
Chapter warnings: graphic depictions of a crime scene/past violence.

Notes: For Jane, whose request was quite simple, as requests go - "all I want for Otherstide is for you to post Les Fleurs Du Mal, you coward". And considering I've been procrastinating on this particular fic for a good long while now, I feel like that's an entirely fair request. Hopefully the act of posting at least the first chapter will kickstart me into finishing it. And  incidentally, many thanks to Jane for letting me bounce all the initial ideas off her when I was first planning/writing this fic.

More to come soon!

Title: poem for my platonic soulmate
Length: 109 words
Genre: Original poetry
Rating: Gen

Notes: For a dear friend, who requested simply that I write 'a song or a poem' for her. I am not a poet in any sense of the word and my original music works are travesties - so this is what you're getting. Sorry I can't give you more.

fic: Hysteresis | HPMOR

For Otherstide this year, I challenged myself to write at least a few stories/ficlets for prompts that my friends had given me previously. I didn't manage to get as many of them done as I had hoped, but the few that I did manage to complete/slam together will be posted over the next couple of days! Fandoms will vary. Quality will also vary.

First up – (arguably) the most obscure!

Title: Hysteresis
Length: 5658
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality
Rating: Teen and up
Warnings/Notes: Some amount of torture directed at a 12 year old
Characters: Harry Potter, Professor Quirrell, some random NPCS (all HPMOR versions)
Summary: Harry had never been so glad to feel a wholly irrational sense of complete and utter doom welling up inside him.
Alt link:
AO3

Notes:
For Jaybird, who requested some HPMOR recursive fic with some Harry & Quirrell friendship ("or, you know, as close as 'friendship' gets with the messed-up dynamic that they're got") and hurt/comfort too. And a) it's been ages since I've read this fic, so most of this is based off Chapter 26, which was the main one that I reread when researching this and b) I am not entirely sure how to write MOR!Harry's character or inner dialogue, so this may be more than a bit off. Apologies for both of those, as well as any inconsistencies, and the paper-thin, nonsensical antagonists. Happy Otherstide!

Oh, come on. You're not nearly egotistical enough to think that you can actually control the whims of fate by clicking your fingers together. Are you? )

fic: Time and Time and Time Again | Doctor Who

Title: Time and Time and Time Again
Recipient[personal profile] dreamkist
Length:  9856 words
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Doctor Who
Rating: Teen and Up
Warnings/Notes: Major Character Death, something that's a bit like suicidal ideation if you squint
Characters: Twelfth Doctor, Bill Potts, Nardole, Missy
Summary: Bill had watched Groundhog Day, once. Or, well, she had watched half of it. Skimmed it, sort of. Watched the opening few scenes. Read the summary on Wikipedia?

Seasonal stuff!

I remembered Yuletide's existence far too late to sign up for that, which is a bit of a pity, but I'm immensely excited to see what sort of incredible stuff people create for this year. There's so many great fandoms in the tag already and I'm more or less quivering with anticipation for reveals.

My public_call fic hasn't been revealed, but it's only a matter of time. Stay tuned! And on that note, I've been keeping up with basically all the fics in that particular exchange so far and they are ALL excellent, although sadly I haven't had a chance to leave reviews/comments on... well, any of them at all. I definitely need to get around to that. Consider this a reminder to myself.

...and finally, since I haven't been able to do any other seasonal exchanges, I ended up setting myself to the task of writing prompt!fics for several of my closer/RL friends for Candlenights and/or Otherstide. There's going to be 2-3 of them, in various fandoms, soon. If I asked you for fic prompts, you can cross your fingers for me to deliver. Maybe.

I have been thoroughly spoilt! (and i love it)

The wonderful and amazing [personal profile] annariel has written me an AMAZING tale of adventure, museum heists and murder for the public_call exchange, and I couldn't be happier!! The Tegenbalansie Chronometer features Seven and Ace AND Twelve and Bill (yes, all of them!! together and in various combinations). I'm just - really sort of incoherent right now because I've been reading and rereading it and I love it so MUCH and I can't get it together long enough to write a proper review for the last chapter (oh yeah did I mention it's multichapter?! YEAH) which I really super need to do now. Please go check it out!!
